The Chemise a la Reine is a gown originally created for Marie Antoinette. It was a bit of a scandal at the time due to its light construction reminding people more of under pinnings than a dress to be worn in public. Marie Antionette - originally from Vienna, Austria , wanted something more casual than the typical French Court Dress. It was reminiscent of the dress of the peasant shepher dresses of her homeland , adding to the controversy.

It is a perfect dress for a warm summer picnic, luncheon or Afternoon Tea and has several versions and variations created over the years. As was common at the time, the King and Queen drove the fashion sttyle. So despite the initial controversy, it was a style widely adopted across Europe in the late 18th century.

For our Chemise workshop we will use simple rectangle construction that is gathered at the waist, under the breast, and the neck. It will include a gathered flounce around the neck and gathered elbow length sleeves. Other options are straight thin wrist length sleeves and the neck can have a flounce or not. The waist is cinched with a wide ribbon tied in the back with a big bow. Some would also have a bow at the neckline. The sleeves could also have thin ribbons tied on them.

This dress is worn with stays, a shift, a white petticoat with a bottom ruffle and a bum roll. We will make the dress on Saturday and petticoat and bum roll on Sunday and any finishing on the dress as needed.
